Storytelling Session
February 15, 2003
2.00 pm - 5.00 pm
Philippine General Hospital Wards 9 & 11

Valentine's was extended by a day last February 15, as a group of us spent a heartwarming afternoon with the patients of the pediatric wards of PGH. It was a good mix of active members, comebacks and new faces who gathered to spread some valentine cheer. Those who attended the storytelling were members Mike and Ray Alimurung, Mike Julian, Jay Estoya, comebacks John Quinto, Jimmy Catapia, Dan Diaz, John Dapita, Rhiana Roque, new members Deedee Perez, Chiqui Okol, Martin Luchangco, Bea Nakpil, and of course Criselle Panlilio and myself. It was initially a loose-knit group that became tight as the afternoon turned into a real bonding experience.

The group met at my house and then proceeded to the hospital. At the pediatrics wards, the members spread out alone or in groups of two and bonded with the patients over books, coloring materials, soap bubbles and snacks. We met patients with ages ranging from merely a few months old (who were so tiny and still in incubators) to patients as old as 12. Patients had conditions like lupus (the disease of Ex-Philippine President Marcos), leukemia, pneumonia and bronchitis. Some had a swelling heart or a hole in the heart. One had an operation in the brain and had around 20 stitches straight across her forehead. And here's an anecdote: one baby had really big eyes and when we commented about it to the baby's father he said that it was because when he was born he was constantly crying. In any case, whatever their condition, the kids were happy to see us. Their eyes would light up when we'd show them the books and crayons. And when we'd bring out the bubbles, the expression on their faces was just priceless!

But the afternoon didn't just end at PGH. Afterwards, group went on to the Greenbelt 3 food court for an early dinner. All agreed the afternoon was a great way to get acquainted (or reacquainted) with each other as well as with the foundation's beneficiaries.

Hospital visits and storytelling sessions will be held more frequently to give everyone an opportunity to gather in the true spirit of the foundation. We hope you will join us at the next one!
