Bukas Sarili also affirms the need to invest in the country's future. We
firmly believe that Education is the other half of Filipino development.
Over 100 years ago, Jose Rizal, our national hero, said that before nationhood,
the Philippines must first have an educated citizenry. While it is a universal
truth that Education is a right, not a privilege, and it is enshrined in our
Constitution as a state priority, support for Education is far below the necessary
levels.
An educated citizenry can not only make intelligent decisions for themselves
but for the nation as well. The renowned author, H.G. Wells, has correctly observed
that, "Civilization is a race between Education and Catastrophe," which echoes
strongly within the context of the current Philippine situation.
:: Why tertiary education?
Basic education has been upheld by the State, but tertiary education is lacking
in focus and support. Moreover, tertiary education is the final step of formation
before an individual en ters adult life and begins his or her chosen vocation.
Educational statistics show that in terms of cohort survival, the number of
students who advance from elementary to secondary levels progressively decreases by
virtually half. Those who make it past basic education have demonstrated their
determination and commitment to have a more complete education. Furthermore, a
tertiary education is the new requisite in attaining basic employment. This nation
will only benefit from the opportunities of the information age if its citizens
are equipped to do so.
