The Rummage Sale is one of the fastest and simplest ways to raise funds.
Not much planning is required, almost no overhead is incurred (since many venues
like parishes waive rent for such activities), and collection of items may be
done at a moment's notice.
Through the Rummage Sale, the foundation gathers items that people wouldn't
mind giving away for free (preferably old or used items, though some even give
new items) since these are just accumulating dust and taking up space in their
homes.
The ease of set-up and inventory generation make for a feasible regular (i.e.
quarterly) activity, which can be run by an ever-changing succession of project
heads and can be held simultaneously with other major projects.
The very nature of the project, which necessitates house-to-house collections,
sorting of items, and manning of the sale, unavoidably builds camaraderie and teamwork,
both of which are essential for more complex and time-consuming foundation projects
later on.
Lastly, the Rummage Sale creates an opportunity for other people to buy lots
of items still in reasonable condition at excellent bargain prices.
