Christmas at the Wards
December 21, 2002
1.00 pm - 3.00 pm
Philippine General Hospital

Packing of the 230 food giveaway bags began several days before at the Alimurung residence just after the last Board/Officers Meeting of the year. The night before the event, volunteers from the UP Circle of Industrial Engineering Majors (UP CIEM) brought in P10,300 worth of canned goods which they distributed among the bags.

The morning of the event found members trying to figure out how to stuff all the packed bags into 4 vehicles. Soon, we were at the PGH lobby holding up traffic, scrambling to commandeer wheelchairs, stretchers, oxygen carts, and pretty much anything on wheels with which to transport the bags to the respective wards. Rhiana Roque, our Assistant Medical Head currently interning at the hospital, was the advance party coordinating with the wards and performing groups. She was assisted by Avi Lim, who arrived ahead of everyone else. Volunteers from the various participating organizations (Bukas Sarili, UP CIEM, Santuario de San Antonio Youth) all worked together in carrying and distributing the food bags to the patient families of the Internal Medicine (Wards 1 and 3), Pediatrics (Wards 9 and 11), and Burn Wards.

The Bukas Palad Music Ministry performed a repertoire of 7 songs three times in the IM Wards. Mid-song, Bukas Palad members weaved among the closely packed hospital beds while the volunteers chimed in. Each performance was capped with the catchy "Ang Pasko ay Sumapit".

A stone throw away at the Pediatrics Wards, the theater group Teatro Adarsari performed their rendition of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". Due to the ABS-CBN crew filming in Ward 9, Teatro did only one performance.

It seemed like the day to visit PGH as many other organizations and donors were milling about. We were already the fourth group to do carolling at the IM wards in the past few days alone. Dr. Philip Cruz, Pediatrics Chief Resident and the moving force behind the Give-a-Life Foundation, was busy coordinating with the swarm of visitors. In addition, our performances started an hour behind schedule and volunteers were confused about what to do with patient families from other wards asking for food bags. Much as we would've liked to, we couldn't help everyone. Due to different arrival times of the volunteers, coordination was chaotic. Oftentimes, the patient families did not even know where the donations were coming from.

In spite of everything, we did accomplish what we set out to do, and the smiles on the faces of patients and their families were enough to make another memorable Christmas in the spirit of giving.
